NEW DELHI — The national capital is gearing up for Chhath Puja on Saturday and Sunday when devotees, mostly from eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, will flock to various water bodies to offer prayers to Surya Bhagwan (Sun god).
Around 28 ghats along the river Yamuna where the crowds gather to end their four-day-long fast are being readied to ensure a trouble-free congregation.
The prime ghats which are being readied for the occasion include ITO ghat, Kudesia Ghat, Surya Ghat, Wazirabad Ghat, Sonia Vihar, Geeta Colony, Kalindi Kunj, Bhalaswa-Jahangirpuri, Narela and Mangolpuri among others.
West Delhi MP Mahabal Mishra, who hails from Bihar, also met chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday regarding Chhath Puja arrangements.
At least 15 lakh people from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh are expected to observe Chhath Puja in Delhi. The capital has an estimated 40-lakh strong Poorvanchali population.
Delhi development minister Rajkumar Chauhan is reviewing the arrangements and has asked civic authorities to step in with necessary arrangements. The preparation is in full swing as the administration is busy erecting tents, installing makeshift lights, making provision for drinking water and upgrading security arrangements.
The Delhi government has written to Haryana to release water in Yamuna to make the squalid river come alive in time for the festivities. Haryana is likely to do so by Thursday.
