A polling officer was killed at a polling station in a freak incident of firing by a home guard before polling started in Sheohar Lok Sabha seat.
The home guard was cleaning his gun when it went off.
Meanwhile the deceased polling officer who was injured when the home guard’s gun went off was admitted to a hospital where he succumbed to his injury. He has been identified as Shivendra Kishore.
An FIR has been lodged in this connection and the homeguard arrested, Sheohar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rakesh Kumar said.
Going by the guidelines of the Election Commission, Kishore’s family will be paid Rs 15 lakh as ex-gratia, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) H R Srinivasa told reporters here.
Terming the incident unfortunate and sad, the CEO also said that efforts were being made to increase the compensation alount.
