BHAGALPUR — Villagers lynched a robber and left two others seriously injured when they tried to escape after looting passengers of the Malda-Bhagalpur Intercity Express at Pirpainti station in the district today.
“Around six armed looters boarded the train and looted passengers of a coach at a place between Pirpainti and Mirjachowk stations in Jamalpur-Sahebganj line early this morning,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Kumar Ekle said.
Hearing the cries for help of the railway passengers, villagers caught the robbers as they tried to flee after pulling the chain, he said.
“They beat up three of the robbers and one of them died on the spot. Three others escaped,” Ekle said.
The two injured robbers were admitted at Pirapainti hospital.
The robbers looted cash and jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh from the passengers of the running train.
Police have launched raids in the area to capture the rest of the robbers, who were believed to be hiding in nearby sugarcane fields, Ekle said.
