Bihar faces serious power crisis

Anoop Mishra - October 27, 2009

PATNA — Power crisis in Bihar Power has exacerbated as the state’s two thermal power plants, Barauni in Begusarai district and Kanti in Muzaffarpur district, has become non-functional due to technical snags.

Both Barauni and Kanti thermal power units stopped generation because of technical problem, a Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB) spokesman Hareram Pandey said.

To add to the crisis, the state received 780 MW of electricity from central pool, just half of the scheduled allocation of 1550 MW power per day, Pandey alleged.

Pandey informed that the state was also not getting its share of electricity from 500 MW Talchar power generating plant because of technical fault there.

Besides catering to the requirements of the state capital, the board needed additional 350 MW electricity for maintaining emergency services such as hospitals, railways and defence, he said and pointed out that the rest of the state would face load-shedding.

The existing two coal-based power plants at Barauni and Kanti are yet to get the Planning Commission approval for their much-awaited renovation and maintenance (R&M). The Union power ministry has already given its clearance to the proposal.

“Even if these two power plants get clearance today, it will take another two years to complete the R&M work. The state will remain dependent on the Central sector for power for a few more years,” said a senior BSEB official.

The quality of coal supplied to Bihar is also not good. “As a result of the supply of coal of poor quality, our power plants are likely to develop technical snags. We are asking for better quality of coal from the Raniganj colliery,” another BSEB official said.

The absence of coal linkages has hit the three proposed power plants in the state at Kajra (Lakhisarai), Chausa (Buxar) and Pirpainti (Bhagalpur).

Is the blame game necessary ?
If the politicians are dumb.., then have we, the residents of bihar have gone dumb too ?

Why can’t we initiate a change ?

Lets develop an idea of power generation at micro level…, lets set up micro wind farms, micro solar farms which could power up our villages individually….

Then we can go ahead with it at larger scale.

We have huge chain of rivers.
Have anyone of us ever realised how much wind flows alongside the river.

Set up small wind farms alongside the riverbanks.

Then, hopefully, we won’t have to be dependent on the only two power plants of barauni and kanti for power generation.

Instead of preachers, lets be doers, the movers and shakers.

People, come up with some idea… instead of asking for a war with centre and state govt.

Power not necessarily flow through barrel of the gun.

Power flows in form of Wind and Solar rays too..

Tap them.

Just imagine how much employment we can create with this particular initiative.

well, POWER! there is no dearth of power in bihar, of course there is acute shortage of energy. First and foremost requirement of our state is REMOVAL OF CORRUPTION FROM OUR BLOOD
and SEIZURE OF POWER FROM OUR GOVT. BABUS.

then each and every system will improve by 100%.

JAI BIHAR.

Amit
The failure of our Electricity board is not failure of congress/nitish kr. The collapse of whole state machinary (including BSEB) took place during Lalu’s period. Now it has to be built up again. But till now the performance of generating station is dismal.

Power ! What power??
Nitish is a dismal failure. An engineer by trainig? What he learnt in his engineering days? How is he supposed develop Bihar?By cattle power?or by people’s power?
Join Naxalites. They may have the answer for chronic power shortage. At least their power flows from the barrel of the gun. They don’t pretend to bring development. They promise revolution. So you you will keep revolving on solar power.

Now where are the supporters of congress, can’t they see the behavior of congress party towards bihar, they does not want that bihar should develop otherwise they would not have created so many hurdles, rather they should be lending their hand of support for our state .

State Goverment must raise this issue with Central Goverment for making some dams on Kosi River so that electricity can be generated and be sifficient not only for Bihar but also for other neibouring states and countries. So the whole Bihar can get full electricity supply and sell to others and get revenue. This can be done with Public-Private Partnerships. It is not at all complex issue. Hydro-Power will be very good in the interest of Bihar rather electricity generation by Coal or Uranium. By making dams on Kosi River will kill three burds with one stone (Power for Home consumption, Revenue generation & making dams on kosi will surely help to stop flood which again saves thousands of crores of rupees loss every year). This will certainly contribute in huge way to the development of economy of Bihar. Zero will become Hero.
