PATNA — A local court today sentenced husband and sister-in-law of a woman to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in a dowry murder case.
After hearing the case, District and Sessions Judge Rudraprakash Mishra sentenced Amit Kumar, a native of Zunjhunmahal locality under the state capital’s Gardanibagh police station area, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty of murdering the woman for dowry.
Along with Amit Kumar, the court of district judge also awarded the same punishment to his younger unwed sister Bhawna for conniving in the murder of her sister-in-law Shambhavi.
The court also directed Amit to shell out ₹2 lakh of which ₹ 1 lakh would be made a fixed deposit in the name of couple’s minor daughter who is presently aged around 12 years. She was just two and half years old at the time of the incident while the rest amount would be used to meet the daily and educational expenses of the girl who now lives with her maternal grandparents.
Shambhavi, who was a year junior to Bhawna in her college, had a love marriage with Amit in September 2005. She was charred to death at her husband’s residence after midnight on October 6, 2009. Shambhavi’s parents lived in a flat hardly few paces away in the same locality.
Shambhavi’s father Ashok Kumar Srivastava had lodged FIR making Amit and Bhawna as named accused for dowry death.
Amit’s parents were in Kanpur on day of murder.
