PATNA — The four-day popular Chhath festival began here Thursday amid tight security. Millions of Hindu devotees offered prayers to the sun god across the state.
Chhath is celebrated six days after Diwali. It is associated with faith, purity and devotion to the sun god.
Hundreds of devotees, mainly married women, thronged the river banks early morning to bathe before preparing vegetarian food. Many sang traditional songs dedicated to the sun god.
“We first had a bath to clean ourselves before preparing food, known popularly as ‘Nahai-Khai’ that marks the beginning of the Chhath festival,” Manisha Singh, a housewife dressed in a new cotton sari, said here. She is a ‘varti’ one who performs prayers with old-age rituals and strict discipline and enjoys a high-level of respect from her family and others.
Another woman, Purnima Sinha, said the “ritual of Nahai-Khai is a symbol of purity and strict discipline.
On Saturday the main offerings, Argya, will be given to the sun god on the river banks, Sinha said.
During the festival, married women observe a fast for 36 hours and devotees traditionally offer wheat, milk, sugar cane, bananas and coconuts to the sun.
Colourful idols of the sun god riding his chariot with seven horses, a new attraction this year, were sold on the river banks.

The administration along with dozens of voluntary organisations is working round-the-clock to clean the residential localities and roads leading to the river banks.
“All district magistrates have been directed to accord top priority to the safety of devotees by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar,” an official said.
In Patna, devotees will be provided with full security cover. Seventeen boats of the NDRF (national disaster response force) have been equipped with life saving devices and will constantly patrol the riverfront.
“The NDRF team has been deployed in Patna in view of unsafe and dangerous rising water levels of the Ganges,” Jitendra Kumar Sinha, Patna district magistrate, said.

Shaktiji,
You are advising Biharis to leave Bihar and settle elsewhere for peace and happiness.
Do you think those places mentioned by you will remain peaceful after Biharis start settling there? Peace is not due to a particular area, it comes from the inhabitants.
Biharis (me including) should not search for peace elsewhere, rather they should try to make their own place peaceful and prosperous.
Shaktiji,
You are advising Biharis to leave Patna and settle elsewhere. How funny. In that scenario, will other places remain peaceful? Please note that peace lies not in places but in the mind and attitude of the inhabitants. Bihar has been unpeaceful only because of Biharis.
Moreover, It is my suggestion that Biharis (me including) should not wander in search of peace elsewhere, rather they should work hard to make their own place peaceful & progressive.
nanak
your anger is genuine but donot advise biharis not to live in bombay…it is a metropolitan city and one of the largest in the world…hence if nisha is living in bombay ,she is a few lucky bihari to be there as she can not have a better place like–nariman point ,juhu beach ,gateway of india ,colaba market of leopold fame ,khan chacha footpath outlet ,cheap market of dadar ,bandra colony on sea front, sanjay gandhi national with kaneri caves having 200 budhist viharas ,the vihar lake in the heart of the city …..
bombay is a city where you are free and secure and have opportunity to develop ,can work 24 hours
bombay is specially good for women because they get more freedom ,security ,opportunity etc
in all bombay is far better than patna then why biharis should not live there….
in fact patna has been reduced to be city of goons ,corrupt politicians ,castiest ,most insecure specially for women ,devoid of any good opportunity to develop….
i will suggest all willing biharis who want to develop that they should settle at bombay or delhi or chennai or hyderabad or pondicherry or cacutta or vishakhapatnam…..
of oll these places ,vishakhapatnam is developing very fast and within 10 years it will be better than bombay as an ideal city and as a good port…
i suggest biharis to go to above places by the next train and settle if you want to have peacefull and better life in all respects….
Nisha
Why you living in Mumbai. Why Lallu does not give you job to you and your family. Destroyer of Bihar go back Bihar and live with lallu. Lallu made bihar worst and get biharis beaten all over India. Marathis please throw out these Destroyer of UP and Bihar. Due to these people , Biharis has to migrate , Because they choose worst like Rabri and Mulayam and people has to migrate because they did not do any thing in last 20 years.
I think Congress and BJP are real hooligan in Maharastra. See BJP is having alliance with Shiv Sena and Congress is unofficially allied with MSN. If congress want, they can stop MSN in one day.
Nisha you really made mistake by voting for Congress. You should have voted for some Independant or smaller parties like RKP. Congress promoted MSN at expence of poor Biharis. I see no difference between congress and BJP.
Yes!It’s a great relief for outsiders, residing in Bomaby ,after the defeat of SS and MNS/BJP .I also voted for Congress to buy peace here.Atleast they are not hooligans(goons).
No more beating of Biharis for 3-4 years, Congress gamble worked. Its Raj Thakre (Congress’s protege ) helped congress in getting third term.

Instead of Arguing, We also should highlight the scientific aspect of chhath puja. I recommend the people to read The Science of Chhath by Yogishri Oumkaar (although i couldnt find the book). I found this information in a website. I hope this will be informative. You may also check the information at the website:

The word Chhath refers to the process of consciously obtaining the solar energy through 6 stages involving the methods similar to Hath Yog.
Hath here refers to the austerities like fasting, standing in water, etc.
Stages of Chhath (Conscious Photoenergization Process)
The entire process of Chhath is divided into 6 scientific stages of Conscious Cosmic Solar Energy Infusion Technique (Conscious Photoenergization Process).
Stage 1: Fasting and the discipline of cleanliness leads to detoxification of the body and mind. This stage prepares the body and mind of the Vratti (devotee) to receive the cosmic solar energy.
Stage 2: Standing in a water body with half the body (navel deep) in the water minimizes the leak of energy and helps the prana (psychic energy) to move up the sushumna (psychic channel in the spine).
Stage 3: Cosmic Solar Energy enters the Vratti’s pineal, pituitary and hypothalamus glands (Triveni complex) through retina and optic nerves.
Stage 4: Activation of Triveni (tri-glandular complex) Pineal, pituitary and hypothalamus
Stage 5: A kind of Polarization of happens in the spine, which results in the Vratti’s gross and subtle bodies getting transformed into a cosmic powerhouse. This can also lead to the awakening of the latent psychic energy popularly known as the Kundalini Shakti.
Stage 6: The body of Vratti (devotee) becomes a channel, which conducts, recycles and transmits the energy into the entire universe.
