In order to churn out more lecturers and professors for the premier business schools and encourage research, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta, has doubled the stipend for its PhD programme in management.
The decision was taken at a meeting on December 23. The students will now get Rs 20,000 to Rs 24,000 per month along with a contingency grant of Rs 20,000 annually. Besides, they will also be provided a one-time grant for field study, laptop and opportunities to participate in international conferences.
After the stipend, which will be implemented from 2009, IIM-C will be offering the highest stipend among all the IIMs in the country.
As business schools are grappling with a shortage of skilled faculty, at present, the average annual intake in PhD programme in management is 10 to 15 students. Although there is no restriction on the intake, according to institute officials, the decision will increase the number of students opting for PhD.
The institute has also revised the rules of the fellowship programme. To provide more enriching academic experience to students, the institute will offer teaching assistantships, which will fetch them up to Rs 11,000 per month in addition to the monthly stipend.
“We took this decision so that students can support their stay in the campus,” said Dinesh Varma, Chief Administrative Officer, IIM-Calcutta.

Dear Sir, I take this opportunity to seek help from you regarding an anarchy that we have been facing in an institute of repute – IIMC The institute uses the FPM program just for UGC grants and it doesn’t matter to the FP committee as to the future of the students. The students are debarred from most of the placement procedures and one can expect only the leftover jobs rejected by the PGPs to be mopped by the FP students. Further, the IIM Calcutta institute itself has been cheating on the FP students. The students, those even with family has to strive on a mere Rs 10,000 grant per month. Accomodation and health insurance in IIM Calcutta is NOT free unlike the other IIMs. The worst part is that even after announcing a stipend hike to a new revised 20,000 to 22,000 for the FP students to get more UGC grants and better students, the institute has denied the students of the revised grant. Some of the current batch has already decided to quit due to such poor-show from the institute. The reply to the students from director himself was that the institute lacks sufficient funds for the revised stipend and this news has been kept under cover. IIM C is still advertising a stipend of 22,000 while in reality this happens every year before a fresh batch comes in and finally the institute slips in its promise. Don’t take my word for granted, ask any FP students in IIMC. They will be able to tell you better. You might contact fp_all@iimcal.ac.in and can reach all the fellow students. If you help us remain anonimous, I am sure many of us would tell the truth behind the scene. Please spread this word – we just want to be heard. Thanks and Regards deprived FPs of IIMC
