PATNA — A joint Indo-Nepal team of government officials today inspected the repair works at the damaged Kosi river embankment.
The construction started last year with the assistance of Indian government after swollen river Kosi displaced over 50,000 people in Nepal and thirty lakhs in Bihar.
Government of India provided Rs 1.2 billion for the construction of the embankment to control flood.
Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Bihar Minister for Water Resources, Indian Ambassador Rakesh Sood and Ajay Nayak, chief secretary, Water Resources Ministry Bihar were from the Indian side, while Mahendra Bahadur Gurung, Director General of the Water Induced Disaster Control Department, and Anil Kumar Pokharel, Deputy Director of the Department of Irrigation, were from the Nepalese side.
They jointly inspected the Kosi breach closure works, according to the Indian embassy. The construction work completed close to the stipulated time frame of June one despite frequent strike and blockades on the highways in Terai on the Nepalese side, according to the Indian Embassy sources.
The interest of one and all lies in what they said after the visit and inspection. It matters that who all visited the repair site but more interest is whether they visited the full stretch of 1700 metres where the repair was supposed to be done?
This report does not say anything about these crucial questions which are of relevance to the local people who are destined to bear the brunt of failed governance and bureaucracy. This Brijendra Yadav visited the Kusaha site before the floods occurred also and assured the people that things are perfectly under control but all know what happened on 18th August last year. So the readers will be more interested in knowing that what are the outcomes of the inspection and what these officials are going to do about it?
thanks
