Kalyan – Mulayam come closer

Ajit Kumar - January 19, 2009

LUCKNOW :  It is the time for some to change sides in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls. The question that everybody in Uttar Pradesh (UP) is asking is : “Will Kalyan quit saffron to join Samajwadi?”

BJP vice-president Kalyan Singh on Sunday met SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in New Delhi sending out signals that he may well be on his way out.

The date didn’t go wrong.

Kalyan’s son Rajveer, is likely to contest the coming Lok Sabha elections from Etah on Samajwadi Party (SP) ticket. SP, which has announced candidates for over 50 Lok Sabha constituencies, is yet to announce a candidate from Etah.

Kalyan Singh is unhappy with his party for choosing Ashok Pradhan as Lok Sabha election candidate from the Bulandshahr constituency. Pradhan reportedly worked against Rajveer, in the 2007 assembly elections. Rajveer was defeated from Atrauli seat in Aligarh.

“Kalyan Singh is not feeling comfortable in the BJP. Talks are going on for some time between Kalyan Singh and Mulayam, ” says a SP leader.

Earlier this month, former vice-president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat announced his intention to contest the elections. This created a flutter in the party since many believe that Shekhawat had more acceptability among the BJP’s partners in the NDA than BJP’s PM hopeful LK Advani. Kalyan Singh had supported Shekhawat then.
