Patna better than Mumbai, Chennai to start business: World Bank

Ajit Kumar - June 30, 2009

NEW DELHI — Patna is ahead of Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata in terms of ease of starting a business, according to a World Bank ranking announced on Tuesday.

Of the 17 cities figured in the World Bank and International Finance Corporation’s “Doing Business In India 2009″ report, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Bhubaneshwar are the other cities where it is easier to start a business.

Starting a business measures the necessary steps to enable a small or medium enterprise in general commercial or industrial activities to operate legally in 17 Indian cities — including permits, inscriptions, notifications and inspections.

The report further said doing business is the easiest in Ludhiana, followed by Hyderabad, Bhubaneshwar, Gurgaon, Ahmedabad, New Delhi, Jaipur and Guwahati.

Of the 17 cities considered, Patna was ranked 14th, above Chennai, which stood at 15th position, while Kolkata was at the bottom of the list.

The report ranks the cities based on seven parameters — starting a business, dealing with construction permits, registering property, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts and closing a business.

However, the rankings do not take into account the macroeconomic conditions, infrastructure, workforce skills or security.

historically patna was the best city of the world as it produced largest number of scholars ,thinkrs ,leaders and of course the greatest king of the world…..

now it it the dirtiest city dominated by goons ,kidnappers ,criminal antipeople politicians…..every open space of the govt including streets are encroached by khatals jhopris inhabitating criminals…..

wommen and children are not safe….there in not even a single park or restaurant where they can enjoy..

patna can be developed by cleaning both sides of ganga and it can be better than hyderabad

nitish is trying his best and if he remains in power patna will be the best within a few years……….

It is a good news that Bihar ranked 14th ajead of three metros to start businesses given by WorldBank and IFC , this will help to to boost foreign investment , CM Nitish Kumar is doing good and he should approach foreign countries and companies to invest more in Bihar.
India Cent Govt
It is too sad the India central Govt. is so biased against Bihar and not investing proper finances since last 60 years.

Great news that Bihar is improving with great speed. Coursey Bihar CM, Nitish Kumar. Great Job. Keep doing. We feel ashamed to listen news from Mumbai, MNC Party. Raj Thakre is a hopeless person who is creating anit-national feeling to get cheap publcity. He shoul be punished severely, so that no one in future can dare to divide India.

hey friends
this is a great news that patna has figured in this list declared by World bank and IFC. so what Patna didnot attract investments earlier. this news can give new direction to investments in patna. already their are numerous steps taken by state government to bring Bihar on investment map of the world. this positive news influx gives a credit to the same. i hope that this news gives a boost to the investments in bihar.

I dont think if Patna grabbing 14th position and leaving three metro, is great achievement.

Despite ranking below of Patna these cities (Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata) are attracting tremendous businessmen from India and abroad.

Instead of celebrating 14th rank Bihar, govt should introspect what are the reason which prevent businessmen to invest in Patna.

Still Patna dont have any major MNC where as Chandigarh, Indore, Visakhapattnam, Cochi, Surat, Ahmedabad, Mysore etc are attracting MNC and indeginous business house. Industrialisation is the only key to develop Bihar. And to attain that Govt need to facilitate environment such a way that it can work as primer for further industrialisation.

Better infrastructre and security can attract investors.
