"Henceforth (Jan 26, 2010), for all intents and purposes, Jai Bihar will use Patliputra instead of Patna (e.g. Patna University will be called Patliputra University). We appeal to all to do the same. Your suggestions solicited at s@jaibihar.com." - Sanjeev Singh

Rail Budget : Nitish happy, Modi unhappy

Anoop Mishra - July 4, 2009

PATNA – Contrary to the angry sentiments of people of the State, Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar appeared a happy man as the Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee announced to bring out a white paper on the present financial status of the Railways , that according to Nitish, would ‘expose’ her predecessor, Lalu Prasad.

Nitish Kumar who appeared more concerned on cornering Lalu than commenting on Bihar neglect by the Railway Minister, said, “The truth behind his claims that the Railways earned huge profits successively during his five-year tenure would be unraveled”, Kumar, a former railway minister, told reporters.

Nitish had earlier demanded a probe into alleged jugglery of figures in profits shown between 2004 and 2009.

He also appreciated Banerjee for scaling down targets of Railways and promising realistically. “It is clear departure from Lalu Prasad’s budgetary speeches which remained a bundle of promises much beyond the targets possible to be achieved,” he said.

Nitish was averse to the continuation of the ‘Tatkal’ scheme with Banerjee proposing to reduce the period of advance booking of tickets under the scheme from five days to two days.

Interestingly, Nitish Kumar maintained silence when there were reports that Banerjee was planning to shift railway projects worth Rs 30, 000 crore announced by Lalu Prasad during his tenure as rail minister.

However, Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi was furious that Bihar has been ignored and the projects like the diesel locomotive factory in Saran and the electric locomotive factory in Madhepura appear to be non-starters.

“Laluji had announced projects worth Rs 53,000 crore for Bihar. But the railway budget by Banerjee does not talk about them,” Modi said.

He also  expressed unhappiness that the name of Patna Junction had been dropped from the list of proposed world class stations.

This shows how Nitish Kumar selfish on politics score. It is very clear from Rail Budget that Bihar is neglected and whole Bihar is aware. But our Chief Minister is singing his own song and neglecting the sentiments of Bihar. In such circumstances at least our CM is expoected to be above politics.
