Railways has over 1.7 lakh vacancies, says Mamata
NEW DELHI — Indian Railways has over 1.7 lakh vacancies for various grades, which will be filled in after reviving the existing recruitment process, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee informed the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
Replying to a question, Banerjee said the review of the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) would also examine regional aspirations and problems raised during the railway recruitment process in Maharashtra, Assam, and Karnataka.
The fresh recruitment process will resume only after reviewing the entire process, Mamata said.
She informed the house that, of the 1,72,444 vacancies, 1,12,566 posts are vacant in Group C, 58,329 are in Group D and 1,549 vacancies in Group A and B.
Replying to a separate question, Mamata said there was a backlog of 1,814 vacancies of SCs in Group C and 1,688 for STs. There is no backlog of vacancies of SC and ST in Group A and B.
A special recruitment drive will be launched to fill SC and ST vacancies at the earliest, Mamata informed the house.
She also said that railways was left with only Rs 8,361 crore after paying the pay commission burden and dividend to finance ministry as against her predecessor Lalu Prasad’s claim of Rs 90,000 crore.
She clarified that she was not targeting Lalu Prasad Yadav but only stating the factual position.
The White Paper proposed by the Railways will be released “as early as possible.” It is not against any individual. It will deal with the present state of the organisation, new projects, short-term and long-term policies and the steps needed to improve performance and infrastructure, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said.
When Prasad intervened and said something, she said, “Laluji, I did not speak against you.”
In her 45-minute reply, Banerjee announced the setting up of a group of experts, led by Amit Mitra, secretary-general of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), to prepare a business plan to tone up the performance of the Railways, especially in project implementation through public-private partnership (PPP).

it is a sad affair in the railways….on one hand people are unemployed ,they are rather starving but mamta is sitting over the matter unjustifiably…
the vacancy must be filled up within a month as railway is facing acute shortage of staff and accidents are taking place daily…..
