BODH GAYA – Hollywood star Richard Gere met the Dalai Lama in Bodh Gaya in Bihar where the actor is attending a five-day long religious discourse on Buddhism by the Tibetan spiritual leader, an official at a Tibetan monastery said Wednesday.
60-year-old Gere reached Patna on Monday afternoon without informing the state government and travelled here in a private vehicle without any VVIP trappings and attended the discourses by the Dalai Lama at the Kalchakra Maidan.
“Richard Gere arrived in Bodh Gaya Monday evening. Gere is like any ordinary devotee of Dalai Lama. He may be busy in offering prayers, worshipping at the Mahabodhi temple and listening to religious discourses,” another official at the Tibetan monastery said.
“Gere is in Bodh Gaya as a devotee of Dalai Lama and not as a Hollywood star. He met Dalai Lama,” said an official close to Dalai Lalma.
Thousands of devotees, many of them foreigners, have gathered at Bodh Gaya, where the Dalai Lama is giving religious discourses for five days. Thousands of Tibetans have also gathered in Bodh Gaya. Dalai Lama commenced his teachings Tuesday.
The Dalai Lama reached Bodh Gaya on a chartered flight Monday.
The 1,500-year-old Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya is the holiest Buddhist shrine as it was built near the spot where the Buddha attained enlightenment.
Over 50,000 people from all over the world are expected to assemble at Bodh Gaya’s Kalchakra Maidan to hear the discourses by the Dalai Lama. The discourses are being broadcast on FM radio channels in different languages including English and Hindi.
Richard Gere, known for his performances in Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, and An Officer and a Gentleman, is considered one of Dalai Lama’s most high-profile followers.

It’s a shame that a religion that came out of Bihar seems like a foreign religion in India! NRI’s like us found the treasure of Buddha teachings in the US while Gandhi learned about Buddha while abroad! Satyagraha is none other than Lord Buddhas teaching by which Gandhi was inspired and in turn inspired Martin Luther King jr inthe US. All the first Nobel prize winners from India, such as Raman were inspired by Buddha. After 2500 years Buddha continues to change the world for the best.
Buddhism is the only religion with Dharma sthapana, where we take the Panch Sila, or 5 vows of refraining from taking life, lying, steAling, drinking alcohol or drugs, refrain from cheating on ones spouse.
Without the Panch Sila all Vedas are useless, because the Vedas and all pujas are only for the virtuous.
It is very satisfying to hear that some of the influential personalities have been coming to bihar in recent times. This is an indication that Bihar is no more the same unsafe state as it used to be 4 years back. Also there was a news that Bihar has registerd the highest GDP after Gujarat in last five years. So, all these reveals that Bihar is on the verge of development. Hope that the good work is continued in the future as well and we all will get a chance to earn our living in our place.
people of bihar will be grateful if JAIBIHAR brings out news paper in hindi and english…
it is need of the hour because there is not a single potential newspaper owned by biharis in this state….unlike all other states…..
Yes Jai Bihar doing a great work by highlighting positive side of Bihar , which is needed for development . We wish Jai Bihar Will come on TV channel media also , this will increase the no. of “Jai Biharis” and bond us close togaether
I am totally agree with comment of Salman and really appreciate effort of JaiBihar.com. Its really nice to listen that a famous hollywood celebrity visited bihar recentlly. Actually, its not a problem that bihar is a very poor state! Main problem is, mentality of pepole belong to so called rich states is poor! Mainly i wanna say just keep it up JaiBihar. I really proud of you!
I came to know about Dalai Lama and Richard Gare are in bihar only from jaibihar.com. Why this news not been telecasting by our indian news channel, are they too descriminating bihar as congress does. infact indian news channel only look for “sadak chaap” sensetional news e.g when a prostitute get strips on the road with her pimps, or some kidnapping happens. This so called “sadak chaap” news channels never telecast any news regarding development of works of bihar or visit of some great personalities to bihar. I may request to the editor of jaibihar.com to rais this question to tele news channels.
This is very poritive news that important Hollywood and international personalities have started visting Bihar and Buddhism -the religion of peace Is on rise again .
Bihar will be the top most religious destination of the world.

Thank you Shakti ji and all for your love and support. But, honestly speaking, we do not have enough resources to roll out the print version of the magazine at this stage. We’re planning to launch Nibandh.com (Hindi) and another comprehensive news portal MagadhTimes.com (English) in future.

With due respect, I beg to differ with what has been suggested above.
I recommend, you continue to publish news on development in Bihar in English only.
I am not against Hindi. My mother tongue is Maithili but still I would prefer the news in English and there is a reason for it.
We all know how great the history of Bihar is and how sooner or maybe a lil later, our Bihar will develop. But publishing those inspiring stories in Hindi will again limit it to the people of Bihar or adjoining states who don’t care much about us.
But if it’s in English, the whole of India can read the news. People across the world can read about the good things happening in Bihar. Some one in USA/ around the world, who is a follower of say Richard Gere or H.E. Dalai Lama, may do google news on them and get routed to this article and later be intrigued to read more about this ’shit place’ called Bihar.
Only when the whole world knows what we really are, would then our fellow country men begin to respect us too.
So pls carry on the good work and keep it in English so more and more folks across the naiton and world can read about Bihar.
Regards.
