MUZAFFARPUR / PATNA — A senior Bihar Excise department official was today arrested in connection with a graft case and police recovered cash worth Rs 48 lakh, besides documents relating to investments in real estate and share market worth over Rs 2 crore, from his house during searches.
Acting on a complaint from a liquor trader that state Excise Superintendent (Muzaffarpur) Sanjay Kumar had demanded bribe for some official work, vigilance sleuths led by local vigilance DSP Shiv Shankar Singh, raided his residence in the town and caught him “red-handed” while accepting a graft of Rs 10,000, police sources said.
The vigilance sleuths conducted simultaneous search at Kumar’s house in Muzaffarpur, his apartment in Shantilok Apartment in Raza Bazar locality in Patna, besides a couple of flats here and seized cash worth around Rs 48 lakh.
“We also seized several documents during the raids relating to investments in share market, real estate and mutual funds and bonds, besides fixed deposit certificates from his establishments,” police said.
More disclosures of Kumar’s undeclared and hidden property acquired through unknown sources are also likely soon.
The complainant, Mahesh Rai, said that Sanjay was collecting Rs 10,000 from every liquor trader for returning trader’s own security money of Rs 3.50 lakh after trader’s failure to obtain a tender for opening liquor shop. Only one highest bidder of each case used to get the license for running a liquor shop while all the rest were entitled to get back their security deposit.
A disproportionate assets case would also be registered against the Excise Superintendent after assessment, police said.
Sanjay Kumar’s brother is an IPS officer.
