Shatru not a candidate, yet : Rudy

Shweta Singh - January 13, 2009

NEW DELHI / PATNA : The candidate for Patna Saheb will be discussed by party’s Bihar state election committee which is to meet on January 17, BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

Rajiv Pratap Rudy BJP ”In the BJP, the candidature is decided first by the state election committee and then forwarded to the Central Election Committee (CEC) of the party which takes a final call on the matter,” Rudy informed.

Last week, the former Union Minister and senior Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Shatrughan Sinha had said he was prepared to contest Lok Sabha election from Patna Saheb parliamentary constituency and exuded his confidence that the party high command would give green signal for the same.

Patna Lok Sabha constituency is no longer in existence post-delimitation as parts of it have been put under Danapur constituency while the remaining areas fall under Patna Saheb.

Though the demographic profile has changed, Patna Saheb still has a sizable Kayastha population, to which Sinha belongs. Rajputs form another respectable chunk of the electorate. Another Kayastha leader, Ravi Shankar Prasad, who is also party Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson is the front-runner to fight from Patna Saheb.

Meanwhile, Shatrughan Sinha has supported the views of former Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat’s demanding a probe into charges of graft to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore against the previous BJP government in Rajasthan. Sinha is the third leader after Murli Manohar Joshi and Kalyan Singh to back Shekhawat.
