DID YOU KNOW? Mauryan king, Ashok, was the first to formulate firm tenets for the governance of a people.
"Henceforth (Jan 26, 2010), for all intents and purposes, Jai Bihar will use Patliputra instead of Patna (e.g. Patna University will be called Patliputra University). We appeal to all to do the same. Your suggestions solicited at s@jaibihar.com." - Sanjeev Singh

Sikhs attacked in Pakistan for non-payment of jiziya

Anoop Mishra - April 30, 2009

ISLAMABAD — Terror group Taliban on Wednesday destroyed at least 11 houses and shops belonging to Sikhs in Orakzai for not paying religious tax ‘jiziya’ levied on non-Muslims living under Islamic law, Shariah.

Taliban had occupied houses and shops of Sikhs, minority group in the North West Frontier Province, in Qasim Khel and Samma Feroz Khel areas and demanded the Islamic tax “jiziya” of Rs 50 million on the orders of Haikmullah Mehsud. Mehsud is a close aide of Tehrik-e-Taliaban commander Baitullah Mehsud.

The victim Sikh families have left their villages and taken refuge in Minni Khel area of Orakzai. Taliban militants have a strong control over the north-west region and the border areas of Pakistan.

There are about 35 Sikh families living for centuries  in Ferozkhel near Merozai in Orakzai.

Rescue aid workers and members of foreign embassies are kidnapped from these areas. Earlier, two Afghan diplomats, two Chinese engineers and an Iranian diplomat were also abducted from north-west Pakistan.
