The ongoing feud in the family controlled RJD took a turn for worse on Monday with Lalu Prasad’s elder son Tej Pratap announcing the formation of a new party, which he named after his parents – Lalu-Rabri Morcha.
‘Tired of’ playing second fiddle to his younger brother and leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad , the disgruntled politician assailed his brother for ignoring his demands and repudiating his choice for Jehanabad and Sheohar seats.
“Tejashwi is completely surrounded by “chaatukars (yes men),” he accused, feeling ‘sidelined’ in the party.
The 30-year old school dropout quit the RJD student wing’s patron position last week as a mark of protest against Tejashwi’s ‘high-handedness’ and on being sidelined in the ticket distribution process.
On Saturday, Tej had announced that he would be backing Chandraprakash Yadav and Angesh Singh for Jehanabad and Sheohar Lok Sabha seats respectively if the party did not accommodate his choice of candidates and ‘support’ the former as an independent candidate if the party did not replace Surendra Yadav. The candidate for Sheohar seat is yet to be announced.
Tej Pratap had also expressed his reservation on party’s decision to field his father-in-law Chandrika Rai from Saran Lok Sabha seat. Tej said that he would urge his mother Rabri Devi to contest from Saran.
“If my request is not considered, I will contest against my father- in-law Chandrika Rai as an independent,” he warned.
Lalu and his wife Rabri have nine children, of which seven are girls.. Apart from Tej and Tejashwi – both school dropouts, sister Misa is also active politically. Yet when it came to choosing a deputy CM from his party, Lalu groomed and favoured Tejashwi above all the others.
While Misa has been fielded at the national level as a Rajya Sabha MP after losing Lok Sabha elections in 2014 against Ram Kripal Yadav, Tej Pratap is a state MLA and was the health minister in the same government where his younger brother was made deputy CM. This was not a decision he accepted with grace for the state rumour mill is abuzz with stories as to how he locked up his father in the bathroom when he heard that he was being bypassed for the deputy CM post.
